# What happens if the fabric I picked for my cushion is out of stock?

*Fabric runs out on the mill's schedule, not the workshop's. What you get from the shop is a straight answer, told right away, and a choice.*

Also asked as: The fabric you chose is out of stock; I will wait for the new fabric

> **The quick answer:** If your cushion fabric is out of stock, the shop tells you right away and you choose: switch to an in-stock fabric from the charts and production can start without the fabric wait, or wait while the mill weaves it again, which adds time to production. Discontinued fabrics get a very close in-stock match.

## Key facts

- The shop tells you immediately when your fabric is out of stock.
- An out-of-stock fabric is woven again at the mill before your cushion can start.
- Waiting for the new weave extends production by however long the mill needs.
- Switching to an in-stock fabric lets production start without the fabric wait.
- Once the new fabric arrives, the order moves ahead and the shop says when it goes to the courier.
- If a line is discontinued, a very similar in-stock fabric is offered.
- A factory delay once stretched an order to about 1 month in total.

## Wait for the reweave, or switch fabrics

| | Wait for the reweave | Switch to an in-stock fabric |
|---|---|---|
| When production starts | After the mill delivers the new weave | Without a fabric wait |
| Time added | It varies; a factory delay once made it about 1 month in total | No fabric wait |
| What you keep | Your first-choice fabric | Your date |
| Once the fabric is in | Made, then dispatched; the shop tells you when it goes to the courier | Normal production |
| If the line is discontinued | Not an option | A very similar in-stock fabric is offered |

## Why a fabric runs out at all

Pull up a chair, neighbor, because this one is about the mill, not the sewing room. When a fabric color sells through, there isn't a spare bolt waiting in a back room. It is woven again from scratch, and that takes time before your cushion can start.

The shop tells you straight away and puts the choice in your hands, the way you'd tell a friend the peaches aren't ripe yet. Keep the fabric and wait for the reweave, or pick another from the charts and production can start without the wait. If the line has been discontinued, you are offered a very close in-stock match instead.

## The order that took a month

A buyer wrote in wondering why a custom order was running late. I'll be honest about the slow stretches, because they happen. In one very busy period, a supplier sent the wrong fabric. Another time, the chosen fabric was due the following week. And once, the factory said a fabric needed another 3 weeks, which made the whole order about 1 month.

Each time, the buyer heard about it right away and was offered in-stock fabrics to skip the wait. Waiting or switching was their call, and nobody was left guessing.

## When the date can't move

Is your cushion for a date on the calendar, or for whenever it's ready? If it's the first, say so before you order. One reply noted that the best-sellers on the [velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/) chart are almost always in stock, and that sourcing a fabric for an urgent order added about 1 day.

If you do switch, a [swatch in your own light](https://cushionguide.com/guides/fabric-swatches-before-ordering/) helps you pick the next-best fabric for your [bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/).

> **Tailor's margin:** If your cushion fabric is out of stock and your date can't move, switch to an in-stock color: production can start instead of waiting for the reweave.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** What happens if the fabric I ordered is out of stock?

**The workshop's answer:** The fabric is woven again from scratch at the mill before your cushion can start, so production runs longer, by however long the reweave takes. You can pick another fabric from the charts and start right away, or wait; the shop tells you when it arrives and when the order goes to the courier. Discontinued lines get a very similar in-stock fabric.

**A common question:** Why is my custom cushion order running late?

**The workshop's answer:** Usually fabric supply. A supplier once sent the wrong fabric in a very busy period, another fabric was due the following week, and once a factory needed another 3 weeks, making the total about 1 month. The shop tells customers right away and offers in-stock alternatives.

**A common question:** How long does a custom bench or window seat cushion normally take?

**The workshop's answer:** It depends on the cushion, neighbor. A simple bench cushion is quicker to make than custom velvet or a window seat, fabric supply and the season shift it, and express delivery to the US comes after that.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Are velvet cushion fabrics often out of stock?

Rarely for the best-sellers. One reply noted that the velvet chart best-sellers are almost always in stock, and that sourcing a fabric for an urgent order added about 1 day.

### What if my fabric has been discontinued for good?

Then the shop offers a very similar fabric that is in stock, rather than leaving the order waiting on a line that won't return. You can accept the suggested match or pick another fabric from the charts.

### How long is a normal custom cushion order when the fabric is in stock?

It depends on the piece and the season, neighbor. The cushion is made by hand first, then express delivery follows, and peak periods run longer; one six-cover order took 1 to 2 weeks from order to door. Ask the workshop for current times in writing, and leave a margin before any date that matters.
