# Is a bench pad the same as a bench cushion?

*Same family, different waistline. A pad keeps the bench's lines and height; a cushion changes how the seat feels.*

Also asked as: Can you make it thinner than the standard 4 inches?; My size isn't in the dropdown.

> **The quick answer:** A bench pad is a slim bench cushion, usually 2 in (5 cm) thick; a bench cushion runs 3 to 5 in (7.5 to 12.5 cm), with 4 in (10 cm) the standard. Both use firm 32-density foam wrapped in polyester fiber. Pads as thin as 1 in (2.5 cm) are made without piping, and ties are added on request.

## Key facts

- Standard thicknesses are 2, 3, 4 and 5 in (5, 7.5, 10 and 12.5 cm); 4 in is the default.
- 2 in is the thinnest standard: a slim, low-profile pad.
- 3 in adds cushioning and a fuller look; 4 in is noticeably plumper.
- Pads of 1 in (2.5 cm) or 3/4 in (2 cm) are made only without piping; 1 1/4 in (3 cm) can take piping.
- Every thickness uses firm 32-density foam wrapped in polyester fiber.
- In-between thicknesses such as 2.5 in can be written into the order note.
- Ties are added only on request, at the back corners or anywhere else you name.

## Bench pad or bench cushion, inch by inch

| Thickness | What you get | Piping | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 in (2.5 cm) | Custom pad, barely there | No | A bench already at table height |
| 1 1/4 in (3 cm) | Custom pad | Yes | Seats where height is tight |
| 2 in (5 cm) | Slim, low-profile pad; the thinnest standard | Yes | Dining benches at table height, lids that have to open |
| 3 in (7.5 cm) | More cushioning and a fuller look | Yes | A neat, lower profile on bench seats and window seats |
| 4 in (10 cm) | The standard; noticeably plumper | Yes | Everyday seating and long sitting |
| 5 in (12.5 cm) | The thickest standard option | Yes | Low benches that need height as well as comfort |

## Why a 2 in pad doesn't sit like a board

Type "bench pad" into a search bar and gym equipment comes up first. At home, a bench pad is simply a bench cushion with less foam: same cover, same hidden zipper.

Every thickness here is firm 32-density foam (about 2 lb/ft³) wrapped in polyester fiber, so even a 2 in pad has a soft top over a firm core. Go below about 1 1/4 in and you give up the piping. A straight welt is a kind of honesty, but it needs foam to sit on; [the thinnest seat cushion answer](https://cushionguide.com/answers/thinnest-seat-cushion-1-inch-thick/) has the details.

## Let the bench's height decide

Choose a pad when the height is already right: a bench level with the dining chairs opposite, or a storage bench whose lid has to open. Choose a 3 or 4 in cushion when the bench is low or the sitting is long. A comfortable cushioned seat usually ends up around 18 to 20 in (46 to 51 cm) off the floor; the [seat height calculator](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-thickness-seat-height-calculator/) does your arithmetic.

Ties come standard on neither, so ask in writing; [stopping a bench cushion sliding](https://cushionguide.com/guides/stop-bench-cushion-sliding-ties-nonslip/) covers the options, and [bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) shows the range. What does your bench measure to the top of its seat, dear?

## Two pads and a cushion on one designer's order

An interior designer in the US sent three benches in one message. Two got slim pads, 60.5 x 21 x 2 in (154 x 53 x 5 cm) and 68 x 21 x 2 in (173 x 53 x 5 cm), each with a bolster 4 in (10 cm) across. The deeper third bench got a 77.5 x 25 x 3 in (197 x 64 x 7.5 cm) cushion.

Pad versus cushion, decided bench by bench. And state the bolster's diameter: a standard one would have swamped a 2 in pad.

> **Tailor's margin:** Measure to the top of the bench first. Already at dining height? Order a 2 in pad. Sitting low? A 3 or 4 in cushion.

> A bench pad is a bench cushion with less foam, not less care: same firm core, 2 in instead of 4.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Can my bench cushion be thinner or thicker than the standard 4 inches?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes; orders have run from 1 in to 9 in. Pick the nearest option and write the exact thickness in the personalization box. Thinner usually costs the same; thicker foam raises the quote.

**A common question:** My bench size isn't in the dropdown. How do I order it?

**The workshop's answer:** Choose the range your size falls into, or the next size up; the dropdown only sets the price. Write your exact size, thickness, fabric and piping codes in the personalization box, and the pad is cut to that.

**A common question:** My bench is very long. One pad or two?

**The workshop's answer:** Equal pieces are recommended for fit, durability and handling: 92 in was suggested as two 46 in pieces. Each piece is its own cart item, and one piece can still be made on request.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Will a very thin bench pad still have piping?

Only down to about 1 1/4 in (3 cm). Pads of 1 in (2.5 cm) or 3/4 in (2 cm) are made without piping, and tufted cushions can't be made that thin.

### Do bench pads come with ties already sewn on?

No. Ties are sewn in only on request, at the corners or along the back. Put each tie's position and length in writing when you order.

### Does a thin bench pad slide around more?

Any light cushion can creep on a smooth bench. On narrow benches, order ties or a non-slip base; on a lift-up lid, split the pad at each lid break and add ties.
