# Does the bench cushion come with the foam insert or just the cover?

*Nobody wants to open a box expecting a cushion and find a pillowcase. Here's how the order reads, one question at a time.*

Also asked as: Does this include the foam or just the cover?; Is this the cover only or the full cushion?

> **The quick answer:** A standard custom bench cushion comes with the foam insert: high-density comfort foam inside a removable zippered cover, shipped filled and ready to use. The cover is machine washable. If you already own inserts, covers-only is a separate, cheaper order with no filling, and the shop messages covers-only buyers to confirm that's what they want.

## Key facts

- Standard orders include the cover and a high-density foam insert.
- Cushions ship filled and ready to use.
- Covers are removable with a zipper and machine washable.
- Covers-only is a separate, cheaper option with no filling.
- The shop confirms covers-only orders by message.
- Filling can also be supplied for outdoor cushion sets.
- Bench cushions use about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-density foam.

## “Is it just a cover?”

No. The bench cushion listing is the whole cushion: a [high-density foam insert](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/foam-inserts/) inside a zippered cover, shipped filled. Size doesn't change that. One buyer needed a small 18.5 x 11.5 in (47 x 29 cm) cushion, 4 in (10 cm) thick, in linen, and got the same answer: foam included.

## “And if I already have good foam?”

Then order covers only, through the separate cover-only listing or by asking. It costs less, because there's no foam in the box. The [covers for existing foam Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-covers-for-existing-foam/) walks through measuring the old insert, and the [cover-only](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#cover-only) entry says what you do and don't get.

Is your old foam still springing back, friend, or has it gone flat as a calm sea?

## The order that arrived without its filling

A buyer once ordered from a covers-only sofa listing and expected the filling to come with it. It didn't; that listing never had any. Squalls you can see coming are the easy ones, so the shop changed course: now every covers-only buyer gets a message confirming that covers alone are what they want, before anything is cut.

## “What's inside, exactly?”

Bench and seat cushions carry about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-density, high-resilience foam. It's medium-firm and keeps its shape for years without lumps. The [foam density Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/foam-density-lb-ft3-kg-m3/) explains the numbers.

Outdoor cushion sets can come filled too. To size a bench from scratch, the [bench cushion builder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/bench-cushion-builder/) lays it out.

> **Tailor's margin:** A covers-only order has no foam inside; if the old insert has gone flat, order the full bench cushion with a new foam insert instead.

> A standard bench cushion ships as a high-density foam insert inside a zippered, machine-washable cover, filled and ready to sit on.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Is the bench cushion listing just a cover, or the whole cushion with foam?

**The workshop's answer:** The whole cushion, with the foam insert included and ready to use. If you only need a cover, there's a separate cover-only zippered listing.

**A common question:** Does the price include the foam insert?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Standard orders include the cover and the high-density foam insert, ready to use. Covers alone are a separate, cheaper option.

**A common question:** Does the custom bench cushion come with foam or only the cover?

**The workshop's answer:** Foam is included. Cushions ship complete and filled with high-density comfort foam, not as empty covers. Covers-only is possible if you ask, and the cover zips off and is machine washable.

**A common question:** Does a covers-only order include the foam?

**The workshop's answer:** No. Covers-only listings have no filling, and the shop messages each covers-only buyer to confirm that's what they want. Filling can be quoted on its own.

**A common question:** Is the foam in the price, and can you supply filling for an outdoor set?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes on both. Cushion prices include the foam insert plus a removable zippered cover, and filling can be supplied for outdoor sets too. With inserts of your own, covers-only costs less.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How firm is the foam that comes inside?

Bench and seat cushions use about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-density, high-resilience foam, medium-firm at roughly ILD 42. It keeps its shape for years without lumps; no official ILD certificate is issued.

### Does the cover come off for washing?

Yes. The cover is removable with a zipper and machine washable, so the foam insert can stay out of the machine while the cover goes through the wash.

### Is covers-only cheaper than the full cushion?

Yes. Covers-only is a separate listing, or an option on request, and it costs less because there's no foam. Measure your existing inserts carefully, since the new covers are made to those numbers.
