# Can you make a padded cushion for our hearth or bench corners, with a crawling baby at home?

*Every house with a crawler has one edge the whole family winces at. Here is how the workshop pads it, one custom piece at a time.*

Also asked as: Can you baby-proof our bench corners?; Fabric and batting at the corners, please.

> **The quick answer:** A padded fireplace hearth cushion for a toddler can be made slightly larger than the stones, with a recess underneath so it sits over them. For bench corners, padded fabric can be attached to the bench cushion to wrap the hard edge. Send photos and measurements, such as stones of 37 x 13 1/4 x 2 in (94 x 33.5 x 5 cm), to size each piece.

## Key facts

- Padded fabric flaps can be attached to a bench cushion to cover hard corners.
- A wide-angle photo decides which edge the flap goes on, relative to the zipper.
- The corner's thickness, e.g. 1.75 in (4.5 cm), sets how far down the flap reaches.
- A hearth cushion can be made slightly larger than the stones, with a recess underneath.
- Hearth pieces are sized from photos (a PDF works) and stone measurements.
- Tie straps can be added; their length and position go in personalization.

## Three hard edges, three padded answers

| Hard spot | What gets made | What to send |
|---|---|---|
| Bench corner | Extra padded fabric attached to the bench cushion, reaching down over the corner | A wide-angle photo and the corner's thickness, e.g. 1.75 in (4.5 cm) |
| Fireplace hearth | A cushion slightly larger than the stones, recessed underneath to sit over them | Photos (a PDF works) and the stones' length, depth and height |
| Child's bed slide | A small cushion with free tie straps | Cushion size, strap length and where the straps go |

## Stones in front of the fireplace

A family wrote to the workshop about the stone hearth in front of their fireplace and a baby in the house. The stones measured 37 x 13 1/4 x 2 in (94 x 33.5 x 5 cm). The shop said a cushion slightly bigger than the stones, with a recess underneath to sit over them, made sense, and asked for photos, a PDF being fine, to work out the sizes.

## Why the zipper side matters for a corner flap

The padded flap is sewn onto the bench cushion, so where it sits has to be worked out against the side the zipper runs along. That's why the workshop asks for a wide-angle photo first. Then it asks how thick the corner is, say 1.75 in (4.5 cm), so the flap reaches far enough down.

Kids and dogs are the real quality control, neighbor, and a crawler finds the hard edge first. See [fireplace hearth cushions](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/fireplace-hearth-cushions/) for more hearths, [bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) for the base piece, and [kids' room cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/kids-room-cushions/) for the rest of the house. Which edge in your home gets the wince?

> **Tailor's margin:** To pad a bench corner for a crawling baby, send a wide-angle photo and the corner's thickness, such as 1.75 in, so the flap reaches down far enough.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Can the bench cushion have extra padding over the hard corners for a crawling baby?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, extra fabric can be attached to cover a bench corner. The shop asks for a wide-angle photo to decide which edge it goes on relative to the zipper side, and the corner's thickness, e.g. 1.75 in (4.5 cm), to know how far down it should reach.

**A common question:** Can you make a small cushion with straps to tie onto a child's bed slide?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. One was made at 17.5 x 12 in (44.5 x 30.5 cm), 4 in (10 cm) thick, with two free 18 in (46 cm) straps at the corners of the long side. Select the closest size and write the dimensions, fabric, and strap length and position in personalization.

**A common question:** What's the toughest, easiest-to-clean fabric for cushions kids climb on?

**The workshop's answer:** Soft fabric, a wipe-clean microfiber that is more durable than linen, or velvet. Both stand up to daily use by kids, and velvet is the easiest to spot-clean. The striped cottons are harder to keep clean.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How do I order a custom hearth or corner cushion?

Select the closest size on the listing, then write the real dimensions, the fabric, and any straps with their length and position in personalization. These are one-off pieces, so they are sized from your photos and measurements.

### Is velvet a sensible fabric for a cushion a baby crawls on?

Velvet's tight weave spot-cleans easily, and the covers machine-wash at 86°F (30°C). The workshop recommends it over linen for homes with small kids and cats.

### Can I send a PDF instead of separate photos?

Yes. For one hearth cushion, photos sent as a PDF, with the stone measurements, were what the workshop used to work out the sizes.
