# Can you add ties to a custom cushion so it stays on the bench?

*Yes, dear. But ties are the one detail nobody guesses for you, so here's the checklist I'd pin above the order form.*

Also asked as: Add strings to the bottom to tie around the bench; So it doesn't fall off

> **The quick answer:** Yes, fabric ties can be sewn onto any made-to-measure cushion, from bench cushions to chair pads and odd-shaped seats. Write in the Personalization box how many ties you want and where they go, such as the corners, two on the back edge or the wider side of an odd bench, and they're sewn into the seam. Ties are never added unless you ask.

## Key facts

- Ties can be added to any made-to-measure cushion on request, including bench cushions, chair pads and odd-shaped seats.
- Tie requests go in the Personalization box or order note.
- Ties can go on the corners, on the back edge or on one side.
- Ties are sewn into the cushion seam.
- A 14 x 18 in (36 x 46 cm) cushion for an odd-shaped bench was made with ties on the wider side.
- Ties are not added unless requested, so say yes or no explicitly.
- Bench cushions come in standard thicknesses of 2 to 5 in (5–12.5 cm), and ties can be sewn onto any of them.
- An L-shaped bench is usually made as 2 pieces meeting at the corner, and each piece can carry its own ties.
- The standard bench cushion thickness is 4 in (10 cm), and most buyers keep it.

## The tie note, line by line

- ✓ Say "ties: yes" in plain words; a cushion without the request ships without them.
- ✓ Give the number: two, four, one per corner.
- ✓ Give the place: the corners, two on the back edge, or one side.
- ✓ For an odd shape, name the side: "ties on the wider side."
- ✓ Need to wrap a frame? Give the tie length you want.
- ✓ Don't want ties? Write "no ties" so nobody has to wonder.

## Where ties earn their keep

Ties can go on any made-to-measure cushion: [bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/), chair pads, odd-shaped seats. Production works from your note and sews the ties into the cushion seam, so they're part of the cushion, not an afterthought. Corners are the usual pick on a bench, chair pads usually take two on the back edge, and an odd shape takes them wherever you say.

Where does your bench have a leg, spindle or rail to tie around? Measure the bench, not the cushion you used to have. The [tie placement Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-tie-placement-chairs-swings/) and [how to stop a bench cushion sliding](https://cushionguide.com/guides/stop-bench-cushion-sliding-ties-nonslip/) go further.

## Ties, a grip base or Velcro

| Option | Offered? | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric ties | Yes, on request | Sewn into the seam, as many and wherever you say |
| Non-slip bottom | Yes, on request | Also only added when you ask |
| Velcro tabs or snaps | No | Two-sided Velcro strips have been added on request at extra cost; wait for confirmation |

> **Tailor's margin:** Ties on a custom bench cushion are never automatic: write how many and where in the Personalization box, or the cushion ships without them.

> A 14 x 18 in bench cushion for an odd-shaped seat got its ties on the wider side, because the order note named exactly which side.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Can ties go on the bottom so I can tie the cushion to my bench?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Write the request for ties in the Personalization section when you order, and production will add them.

**A common question:** Could you add strings so the cushion doesn't slide off the bench?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, ties or strings can be added on request.

**A common question:** Are cushion ties something you offer?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. They can go on the corners, or two on the back for chair pads. Just mention it in the personalization box when you order.

**A common question:** Can a small, oddly shaped bench cushion have ties?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. A 14 x 18 in cushion for an oddly shaped bench was quoted with ties on the wider side.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Do chair pads take ties in the same spots as bench cushions?

Usually not. Chair pads commonly get two ties on the back edge, while bench cushions often take them on the corners. Either way, write the count and the position in the Personalization box so production sews them where you need them.

### Can I get Velcro instead of ties?

Velcro tabs and snaps aren't made. Two-sided Velcro strips have been added on request at extra cost, so ask in the personalization box and wait for confirmation; otherwise ties or a non-slip bottom are the usual answer.

### Can the ties be long enough to wrap around a bench frame?

Yes, if you say so. Put the tie length you need in the Personalization note along with the count and the position. Production works from that note and sews the ties into the cushion seam.
